Welcome to the NJ Pine Barrens Clean-Up FAQ page! Here, you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our annual effort to preserve and protect one of New Jersey’s most unique natural treasures—the Pine Barrens. Whether you’re a first-time volunteer or a long-time supporter, this page will help you make the most of your participation. Together, we can keep the Pinelands clean, healthy, and thriving for generations to come.

What do I need to do to participate?

Show up at the Brendan T. Bryne Ranger Station between 9 AM and 10 AM on Sunday, October 26, 2025 for registration. You can also pre-register online.

The State of New Jersey also requires participants to complete the form below to take part in the Pine Barrens Clean-up. Feel free to download the form, fill it out, and bring it to the event, or copies will be made available to sign at the event during registration.

Volunteer Application

Is this event a trail ride?

No. Our clean-up groups will be traveling down many trails, but the purpose will be to find trash, making frequent stops along the way, as needed.

Do I need a 4-wheel-drive to participate in the clean-up?

No. While most participants will have 4-wheel-drive vehicles, they are not required. If your vehicle is not capable of traversing the unimproved roads, you can stick to paved roads in the area.

Are there any vehicle requirements to participate?

All vehicles must be registered and street legal.

What if I don’t know my way around?

Several teams will be headed out to clean up from the Brendan T. Byrne ranger station. When you arrive at registration, just let our team know you are looking for a group to join and we will help you find one that matches your vehicle’s capabilities.

How long is the clean-up?

The clean-up starts at 10 AM and runs until about 3 PM or until our dumpster is full, whichever is sooner. Groups should periodically check in with our team for updates on the dumpster capacity, especially before picking up a large haul.

Are we allowed to collect tires?

Yes. In some previous years, we were restricted on collecting tires. However, Brendan T. Byrne has notified us that tires can be collected this year.

Are there any restrictions on what can be collected?

Yes. Chemicals, paints, and fuels cannot be placed into the dumpster. If volunteers find them, they are asked to report the location to the ranger station.

Is there any other way I can help?

Yes. We always welcome participants bringing snacks, goodies, or supplies to hand out to our volunteers. Additionally, we accept donations to help cover the tipping fees for the dumpster used in the clean-up. Feel free to contact us for more information on other ways you can participate.
